The family of Cecil Sinclair, a gay man and a Navy veteran who served in the the first Gulf War, surely faced even greater grief after the High Point Church in Texas withdrew their offer to hold Sinclair’s funeral at the mega church after they learned he was gay.
Of course the High Point Church has every right to deny Sinclair a funeral. His life partner, Paul Wagner (also a a Desert Storm veteran) noted, “I have fought for their right to hate me.”
This doesn’t mean the church cannot be criticized for their actions. Moderate and liberal Christians need to stand up to the religious right and protest the hijacking of their religion by cruel authoritarians who often forget or ignore the teachings of Christ.
